Combat Mechanics Guide
Why Combat Mechanics Matter
SHONEN UNLEASHED fights are won in the margins — one extra frame of block stamina, one correctly read armor state, one punished iframe whiff. Update 11 added visual clarity to systems that existed in fragments before: Ultra armor, active iframe highlights, and M1 immunity stun indicators. Understanding these states separates players who complain about "unfair trades" from players who convert reads into ranked win streaks.
This guide documents every major defensive and offensive state in the current patch. Pair it with our perfect block guide for defensive fundamentals and the Update 11 patch notes for character-specific balance changes that interact with these systems.
Ultra Armor
Ultra armor is the strongest non-invulnerable defensive state in SHONEN UNLEASHED. While active, no attack can stun you for the entire duration — including grab stun. You still take damage; you simply cannot be hit-stunned out of your action. Identify Ultra armor by a blinking vermillion (red-orange) highlight on the character model.
Do not confuse Ultra armor with super armor on individual moves. Super armor on a single swing may break after one heavy hit; Ultra armor persists for the full window unless the move ends. When you see vermillion blinking, stop m1ing into it — wait for the window to expire or use a grab only if the move is not Ultra armored (grabs cannot stun through Ultra armor anyway, but they still connect for damage in some cases).
Jonathan's Update 11 Zoom Punch super armor and Naruto PTS clone throw hyper armor are examples of move-specific armor that may use similar visuals. Lab each matchup on the training private server to learn which skills grant full Ultra armor versus partial super armor.
- Visual: blinking vermillion highlight
- Effect: full stun immunity including grabs
- Counter: wait out the window or punish endlag
- Added: standardized in Update 11
Active Iframe Indicator
Invulnerability frames (iframes) let skills pass through attacks during specific animation windows — dashes, evasives, and certain stand abilities. Update 11 added a white highlight that displays while iframe skills are active, so you know exactly when an opponent is intangible.
Punishing iframe skills means whiff-baiting: feint an approach, let them burn evasive or dash iframes, then confirm during recovery. If you see white highlight, do not throw block-breakers or long combo strings — you will whiff and eat a punish. Track iframe cooldowns mentally; most evasives share similar recovery across the roster.
M1 Immunity Stun
M1 immunity stun is shown by a light orange highlight. The opponent is in standard hit-stun — except basic attacks (left-click M1s) do not add stun during this window. This state existed before Update 11 but was invisible; the orange indicator now tells you when m1ing into stun is pointless.
Use skills and block-breakers to extend stun instead of mashing M1 when you see orange. Conversely, if you are stunned with orange active, know that your opponent may overextend with M1s that do not lock you — creating reversal opportunities with evasive or counter-evasive if you read the pattern.
Super Armor, Block & Stun Basics
Super armor on individual moves lets you trade through lighter attacks without flinching — common on Guts swings and certain awakening openers. Block (F) drains stamina; perfect block (timed F) reflects block-breakers and opens huge punishes. Standard stun locks opponents for combo extensions unless they evasive out.
Update 11 rescripted stun logic server-side to reduce lag when multiple fighters apply hit-stun in Trios. Reactions may feel slightly snappier without changing most move frame data. If trades feel different post-patch, re-lab your main's confirm windows on a private server.
- Block (F): stamina-based defense; breaks on empty stamina
- Perfect block: timed F against block-breakers
- Evasive (R): short iframe escape; counter-evasive on read
- Awakening (G): transformation with enhanced kit
- Ultimate (T): high-damage finisher; often cutscene or long startup
Applying Mechanics in Ranked
Ranked solos reward players who identify armor states before committing meter. In Duos and Trios, Ultra armor and iframe reads multiply — one misread in a 2v1 snowballs fast. Call out armor states to teammates in voice chat when possible.
After Update 11, Jonathan Zoom Punch super armor and Luffy PTS Bullet guardbreak changes shifted matchup charts. Revisit tier lists and lab new trade patterns. Ultra armor awareness alone can climb you one rank tier if opponents still m1 into vermillion highlights.
Frequently Asked Questions
What color is Ultra armor in SHONEN UNLEASHED?
Ultra armor shows a blinking vermillion (red-orange) highlight. No attack can stun you while it is active, including grabs.
What does the white highlight mean?
White highlight indicates an active iframe skill — the character is invulnerable during that window. Do not attack into it.
What does light orange stun mean?
Light orange is M1 immunity stun. The opponent is stunned but basic attacks (M1s) cannot add stun. Use skills to extend pressure.
Did Update 11 change stun mechanics?
Update 11 rescripted stun for lag reduction and added visual indicators for Ultra armor, iframes, and M1 immunity stun.
Can grabs beat Ultra armor?
No. Ultra armor prevents all stun including grab stun for its full duration. Grabs may still deal damage but will not lock the opponent.
