What Is a Perfect Block?

Perfect blocking is SHONEN UNLEASHED's highest-skill defensive mechanic. Standard blocking with F absorbs regular attacks until block stamina breaks or a block-breaking skill connects. Perfect blocking adds a timing layer: press F immediately before a block-breaking attack lands, and you nullify the damage entirely while pushing the attacker backward.

The official game description confirms this interaction — block-breaking attacks normally punish turtling, but frame-perfect blocks flip the advantage. The attacker staggers back, opening a punish window for your rush, skill combo, or awakening confirm.

Perfect blocks appear constantly in high-rank ranked gameplay. Learning the timing against common block-breakers on meta characters is often the fastest skill upgrade for players stuck in bronze or silver.

Understanding the Timing Window

The perfect block window is narrow — roughly a fraction of a second before block-breaking impact. You cannot hold block indefinitely and hope for perfection; holding F too early registers as a standard block that breaks against block-breakers.

Practice the rhythm: watch the enemy animation startup, release block if you were holding, then tap F as the block-breaker connects. Each character's block-breaking skills have distinct visual tells — learning per-matchup tells matters more than generic timing drills.

Audio cues help. Many block-breaking skills have recognizable sound effects on startup. Pair visual and audio tells during practice until perfect blocks become reflexive against your most common ranked opponents.

Which Attacks Can Be Perfect Blocked?

Only block-breaking attacks trigger perfect block opportunities. Standard melee chains and non-breaker skills are absorbed by normal blocking — perfect timing on those does nothing special beyond holding block.

Consult the Trello board for each character's block-breaking skill list. Meta picks like aggressive rush characters often rely on specific skills as block-breakers; knowing which number ability to watch for simplifies your defensive read.

Ultimates and some awakening-enhanced skills may also break block. These high-commitment attacks are prime perfect block targets because whiff punishes after a perfect block often end rounds outright.

Punishing After a Perfect Block

After a successful perfect block, the attacker staggers backward with recovery frames exposed. Immediately input your fastest punish — rush (X), a point-blank skill, or melee chain depending on range. Hesitation wastes the window.

Lab punish routes in casual free-for-all until muscle memory connects perfect block to confirm automatically. The goal is eliminating conscious thought between defensive read and offensive punish.

Perfect Block Practice Drills

Drill one: queue casual and ask opponents to spam block-breakers — many players cooperate when you explain training goals.
